Why 10,600 nm is still the resurfacing benchmark
CO2 at 10,600 nm is absorbed almost entirely by water. Because skin is mostly water, the energy is consumed at the surface — which is precisely what makes controlled ablation possible. Near-total absorption vaporizes a precise column and leaves a thin coagulative rim; that rim is the wound-healing signal, and the depth of it is what the operator is really tuning. Fractional delivery puts that energy down as microcolumns across a scan area up to 20×20 mm with spot diameters from 100 to 2,000 µm, leaving untreated bridges of skin between columns to drive faster recovery than full-field ablation.
Order, center and random scan modes and seven output geometries — circle, ellipse, triangle, rectangle, square, hexagon, straight line — let the operator match the treated shape to the anatomy instead of forcing a square onto a curved area.
